Matthew Chapter 8
In Matthew chapter 8 we see that Jesus was not only one who taught with authority– Jesus heals people, calms storms, and casts out demons.
We see that the high calling of Jesus Christ’s teaching (Matthew 5-7), which none of us can live up to, is backed with power to enable us to fulfill His call.
It’s important to note that Jesus drives out six thousand demons from two men with one word. The demons declare what has become evident through both Jesus’ teachings and actions –this is the ‘Son of God.’
I’m personally comforted, and my faith is strengthened every time I read this story due to how easy it is for Jesus to handle legions of demons. As believers in Christ, who house the Holy Spirit, we have nothing to fear as we declare the Word of God in Jesus’ name.
I’m challenged by the town’s reaction to Jesus. Jesus heals and restores two men who were previously wild and violent; however, the town’s focus is on the loss of commerce. Jesus’ power has made them uncomfortable, and they’d rather have the status quo than the power of God. Do we value people’s salvation more than our money? Do we value our comfort and way of life more than God’s potentially disruptive actions?
