A Treasured Possession

Luke 2:19 – ‘Mary treasured all these things, pondering them in her heart…’

One of the most beautiful verses of the Old Covenant that gets lost in the English translation of the Hebrew text comes from Exodus 19:5. There God says, ‘If you obey me fully and keep my covenant, then out of all nations you will be my treasured possession.’ The expression, if you obey me fully literally says in the Hebrew, If, listening, you will listen to my voice.

Do you treasure what is said about Jesus as Mary did? The Hebrew word segullah, is translated ‘treasured possession’ and occurs eight times in the Old Testament. It is used by God towards his people Israel six times with the intimation of a bridegroom claiming his bride. God is wanting to claim us as his own treasured possession. For us to belong to God as He desires, we must treasure and ponder Christ the way Mary did. Our treasuring of Him comes out of us understanding that we are the apple of His eye. We love because He first loved us. What more could God do to reveal how much He treasures us then to send His Son Jesus Christ into the world to redeem us from sin and call us into intimacy with Himself?

Are you treasuring the things that have been said of Jesus and pondering them in your heart? If listening, you will listen to His voice, you will find just how treasured you are by the king.

Heavenly Father, thank you for treasuring me enough to send Jesus Christ to redeem and restore this world. Help me to listen and hear your voice through the Word and prophetic voices of others. Establish my heart to treasure you more each day, in Jesus’ name, Amen.
