1 Peter 3:3-4 – “Your adornment must not be merely the external—braiding the hair, wearing gold jewelry, or putting on apparel; 4 but it should be the hidden person of the heart, with the imperishable quality of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is precious in the sight of God.” (NASB)
Catherine Clark Kroeger devoted her academic life to studying women in the early church. She concludes that a woman in Jesus’ kingdom society ‘is not ultimately defined by the excellence of the table she spreads but on spreading her heart open to God’s Word (The Jesus Creed).’
It is sad that we live in a society obsessed with objectifying women, treating them as if their value is only measured by their physical beauty. What Jesus reminds us of is the fact that true beauty that every man values and treasures over the long haul is the hidden person of the heart. Sure, physical beauty, nice jewelry and clothes can initially draw people in, but they will never keep people close and garner their respect over time and eternity.
Ladies, it is so hard to trust this in our society today, but believe God’s Word. The unconditional love you are seeking can only be found through putting your priority on a relationship with Jesus. Physical exercise and diet has value, but godliness has reward now and for all of eternity. Do not replace godliness for temporary and fleeting vanity. Do not replace a personal and intimate relationship with Christ trying to be a productive worker for Him. There is nothing more attractive to God and man than someone who prioritizes time with Jesus; spilling over into a countenance and service filled with His love, His spirit, and His character.
Heavenly Father, help me to tune out the values of this world and tune into your values today. Jesus, thank you for the invitation to share everything with you and have you join me in my service to others today. Help me not to worry, but to do my best and know you’ve got the rest.
