Luke Chapter 16
Throughout the Bible God gives us many thermometers. Scriptures that we can use as specific tools to take our spiritual temperature. Jesus gives us just one such tool within the parable of the shrewd manager. In verses10 and 11 when he says “whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much and whoever is dishonest with very little will be dishonest with much. So if you have not been trustworthy in handling worldly wealth who will trust you with true riches?”
The thermometer here takes our temperature on our integrity. Most people can show great integrity during the big things in life when they know everyone’s looking but it’s the small actions that are more telling of where our heart is. Can God trust you to call a friend that is struggling? Can he trust you to treat a non-believing co-worker with love and gentleness? Can he trust you that when prompted by the Holy Spirit you pay for the man’s coffee behind you? Will you follow through with his leading? These are the smaller gifts he gives us, a way to test our hearts and see if we can be trusted with the bigger things in the spiritual world. And let us never forget that it is in these little actions of obedience that our faith is boosted and brings us great joy in our service to the Lord.
