Do you want to get well?

Monday, October 26, 2020

John 5:5-6 – A man was there who had been ill for thirty-eight years. When Jesus saw him lying there, and knew that he had already been a long time in that condition, He said to him, ‘Do you wish to get well?’

There is an assumption amongst many Christians that if everyone simply understood Jesus and His good news, they would certainly receive it. We are reminded by this story in the Gospel of John that not everyone wants to get well.

There are people who grow accustomed to a life of woe and disability. They learn to appreciate the attention it brings as well as getting to leave the working and worrying of responsibility to others. People are good at making excuses for themselves when they want to remain in sin, when they want to shirk personal responsibility, and when they like the rush of drama.

Jesus Christ brings healing, wisdom, and power for our struggles. He can bring resolution if we want it. The problem is the resolution starts with changing us, not others or our circumstances. Do you want to get well?

Heavenly Father, thank you for sending your son Jesus Christ to make us overcomers. Lord, help me to recognize where you are wanting to make me whole and help me to trust in your way of getting there. Amen.
