Embodying the Logos of God

Friday, December 19, 2020

John 1:1, 14 – In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God…And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us; and we saw His glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.

The NIV Cultural Backgrounds Study Bible tells us, “Philosophers employed logos, ‘word,’ for the divine reason that orders the universe.” The Gospel of John begins by bringing our minds back to the beginning of creation. In the beginning, the word of God brought order to chaos and light to darkness out of His divine reason and thus creation was declared, ‘very good.’ John is wanting us to recognize that in Jesus, there is now a new creation possible again. Just as there was darkness and chaos in the beginning, Jesus brings to light a new humanity of peace and order in Himself. He is full of grace and truth to renew and restore the image of God that was lost on the earth.

When we receive Jesus, we are empowered to follow His divine reason and embody the Word to others. We are called to be transformed by the renewing of our minds to no longer be conformed to the ways of this world. As we let the word of Christ richly dwell in us, God’s divine reason begins to bring peace and order into our world again. James tells us this wisdom from above is peace-loving, gentle, reasonable, full of mercy, impartial in judgment, and pure in intentions (3:17-18). This is the new creation in Christ. This is the light the world desperately needs. This is the logos of God becoming flesh and dwelling amongst us.

John 1:10 says, ‘He was in the world, and the world came into being through Him, and yet the world did not know Him.’ The Spirit of God and the divine reason of God is readily available in the name and teaching of Jesus Christ; do you know it?

Heavenly Father, my Lord Jesus Christ, thank you for your divine revelation of grace and truth. Help me to humbly trust in your divine wisdom, as revealed in your word, and to obey. I pray it in Jesus’ name, Amen.
