Psalm 42:5 – “Why are you in despair, my soul? And why are you restless within me? Wait for God, for I will again praise Him for the help of His presence.”
The Psalmist here makes the healthy practice of identifying his emotions and then pivoting to God’s presence and promise to help. Whenever we find ourselves feeling restless or in despair, we should stop and ask ourselves why. It is easy to try to drown out our emotions with work or try to ignore our feelings with unhealthy indulgences such as social media, Netflix, or food but if we’ll stop and ask why, God will help us. God will often show us the root cause of our feelings and then help strengthen us and give us peace to handle it. If we will wait on God instead of turning to pseudo-connections to numb out or ignore our despair and anxiousness, we too will praise Him again.
The next time you are feeling despair and anxiety, try to be intentional in asking yourself why. Talk to the Lord about it and wait on Him and the help of His presence. Remember, greater is He who is in you then the adversary of this world. All of us need to learn to give ourselves pep talks regarding the character and promises of God in order to stay encouraged.
“THE LORD IS MY HELPER, I WILL NOT BE AFRAID. WHAT WILL MAN DO TO ME?” – Hebrews 13:6
Thank you Jesus for sending the Holy Spirit to be my helper. Whenever I’m feeling despair, and/or anxiety, help me to stop and ask why. Teach me to build myself up in the faith and know that your grace is sufficient for whatever comes my way. Amen.
