Isaiah 9:6-7 – “…a Child will be born to us, a Son will be given to us; And the government will rest on His shoulders… There will be no end to the increase of His government or of peace to upholding justice and righteousness…”
Advent couldn’t have come at a better time this year in the midst of a volatile political season. This is the season to remember that Jesus has come, and overcome, and taken His seat as king of the world. All authority in heaven and earth belongs to Jesus and all the kingdoms of this world will become the kingdom of our God.
With Christ’s help we must guard our hearts from being embittered by the injustices we see. The Psalms remind us that Jesus will hold all people in power accountable. They also warn us against compromising our own righteousness when anger gets the best of us. The Psalmist tells us to, “Rest in the Lord and wait patiently for Him…Cease from anger and abandon wrath; it leads only to (our own) evildoing.” (Psalm 37) The Psalmist goes on to remind us that those who plot out evil schemes will be eliminated from the earth and the righteous will inherit the land.
Do not lose heart and lose hope by only looking at the corrupt systems of this world. If you are a Christian, you belong to King Jesus as a citizen of heaven. Christ will usher in justice, righteousness, and peace forevermore. As we wait with great anticipation, let us declare to those outside of Christ’s fold the good news that today is a day of mercy!
King Jesus, I pray you establish your love and compassion for those who have not bowed their knee to you as their king, in my heart. Keep before me what is to come that I may not lose hope or lose heart in showing the love that comes with being under your rule. Amen.
